From a teenage rock ’n’ roll disc-jockey on forces radio in Cologne to the biggest audience in BBC radio history: 18 million listeners a day when his Radio One show was simulcast on Radio Two in 1975.
Along the way: Top of the Pops, Seaside Special, a cameo in Monty Python’s Flying Circus, straight man to Ken Dodd (which is where the nickname came from), one of the first television interviews with The Beatles, and 18 seasons as matchday MC at Fulham Football Club.
